The idea of container usage was firstly proposed by Malcolm McLean in 1937. The first container shipment was made in 1965. Since that moment containers has quickly acquired the status of universal means of transportation. Containers were designed specially for the shipments of loads and as a result they have got a number of advantages in this field. E.g., owing to their standard size containers can be easily transferred from one transport to another.

The noticeable advantage of metal containers is their high level of security. Besides the goods transportation, they can be used as mobile and secure storages.

- standard – suitable for many general loads;

- specialized – used for the transportation of the defined load's categories, e.g. for bulk and its subtypes.
